Freelancer

Traditional agency
Pros: Full team available, project management included, SLAs, legal protection, portfolio of reference clients.
Cons: High overhead — you are paying for the sales team, account managers, office, and junior developers doing work that a senior should handle. Timelines stretch. Communication goes through layers. The person you brief is not the person who writes the code.
Best for: Large enterprise projects where procurement requires a formal vendor relationship, SLAs, and a large enough organisation to absorb liability. Not for startups or SMEs where speed and direct communication matter.
Small specialist team
Pros: Senior talent across disciplines (design + front-end + back-end) without agency overhead. You communicate with the people doing the work. Faster decisions, less process. Competitive pricing because the team does not maintain sales staff and account management layers.
Cons: Smaller capacity — a team of four cannot run 20 projects simultaneously. If you need a 50-person development team, a compact studio is not the answer.
Best for: Startups, SMEs, and product companies that need real quality and speed without enterprise-level overhead. Projects from a few thousand euros to six figures, where the founder or technical lead wants to talk directly to the developer.
